HULK OUT!

As a ‘thirty-something’ I’m right in that group that grew up with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno’s TV series, “The Incredible Hulk.” I was such a devoted fan, that I would often pretend to ‘Hulk Out’ much to my parents amusement, (or annoyance) I am sure. One time, my dearly departed mother even offered to assist me by duct taping me to a table in the basement of the parsonage so I could practice my "hulking out." I thought she was playing along with me, now, as an adult, I wonder if she was trying to gain a few minutes of peace and quiet upstairs. Oh, well. Even if so, it was short lived, for I “Hulked” my way free and came upstairs dragging tape strands behind me!

REVIEW OF THE MOVIE:

HULK, the movie, was rated PG-13. I am sure that many kids younger than 13 will end up seeing it, but it certainly earned that rating for violence. Fortunately, for the most part, it is pretty clean. Personally, I thought that the movie moved rather slowly - after all - I went to see Hulk and I began to wonder if I'd ever get to see him, and the reasons for the first 'hulk out' were rather weak or vague. The attempt is made to make it a serious film, which is rather silly when we are basically dealing with a guy who turns green when he is mad. It was definitely too violent for young children, one battle scene is the Hulk battling four fierce dogs who have been infected with the same "anger-management gamma rays" as the Hulk. The CGI on the Hulk is horrible, but then, this wasn't a LucasArts film, and how important is it that a giant green man look real? You often wonder whether you are watching a movie or a giant video game, especially when you see men looking at the Hulk on monitors, they could just as well have had their X-box or Game Cubes hooked in. Bottom Line: Fun movie, not as good as Spiderman, but much better than that dumb movie Dare Devil. The ending..... OK, I won't ruin it for you.

MINISTRY IMPACT: While many kids will see the movie, many who don't will still get into the Hulk Craze for awhile, and that's OK. Use it as an opportunity to talk about anger. Talk about power. Talk about what you would do if you were unstopable. Talk about why love overcame his anger. There is a quote in the movie where he says what scares him most is that when he gives into the anger, he likes it. It is a powerful quote. When we give into sin, we may actually enjoy it, but we are not thinking about the consequences at that time, the destruction and pain and hurt that we cause while we are in our anger or sin. That is why the Bible does not condemn anger, instead it says, "In your anger, do not sin." (Eph. 4:26) It also says not to let the sun go down on your anger. Talk about that: what happens to pent up anger or bitterness?

I bought some giant HULK GLOVES at Wal-Mart that are pretty cool! Use this opportunity while Hulk stuff is being marketed to get some green skit props! (Hulk makes a great bully in a Toybox Tale too!) Hulk gloves or costumes can be used in the future for skits with bully's or talks about anger or revenge or fighting.

The HULK is BACK and he is one MAD MAN! His anger leads to destruction - as does ours. Maybe James had the Hulk in mind when he wrote:
"My brothers, take note of this: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry for man's anger does not bring abut the righteous life that God desires."
(James 1:19-20)
