Help Kids Hide God’s Word in Their Hearts.

I desire to do your will, my God;
Your law is within my heart.
Psalm 40:8

I can still remember the bulletin filled with golden star stickers I earned as a young boy for all the Bible verses I had memorized, verses that even today help me in my teaching, writing, and daily walk with God. We don’t seem to emphasize Scripture memory in church like we used to. Perhaps it is the increased focus on making church fun, the shift from age-graded classrooms to service formats with wider age ranges, or audiences that are generally less churched as our culture becomes more secular. Whatever the reason, Scripture memory enjoys less emphasis today and the results I think are underappreciated. I think there is a direct connection between the lack of Scripture memory and the lack of fruit we see in Christians’ lives.

So how do we help kids memorize scripture without boring them?
