Behavioral scientists have discovered a link between hyperactivity in children and harsh parenting tactics, including screaming, threatening, "smacking," avoidance, and taking away toys and treats. However, the researchers are still unsure if harsh parenting tactics cause a child to behave in a hyperactive manner, or if hyperactivity in the child triggers a harsher parenting response. The scientists describe the situation as "Which came first – the chicken or the egg?"
