We are hosting our first Trunk or Treat this year. Can anyone give me some advice on "dos" and "donts". We are looking to focus less on the decor and more on a car show aspect by inviting classic car owners. I am trying to figure out what to expect since we will be promoting it heavily.

For Trunk n treat - what we did, was come up with a theme.. sports night, "Where is your treasure", "favorite bible story.   Then the s decorate there trunk.  We even made a contest out of this, most creative, best decorated. etc.   then we park the cars in a circle (somewhat) then the kids go trunk to trunk.  We found in our area it was hard to get classic cars to come in, so we went with decorating of the trunk comcept.

Hope this helps.

we have been running KidzFest (our trunk or treat) for the last 4 years and had tremendous response. We run our event on Halloween, many people opt to go for the weekend before. I choose the night of because it is a direct opportunity on a night that is surrounded by "dark" tenancies that we can create a safe environment for families to enjoy the time and step onto our campus.

what we have:
Everything is Free - no need to bring candy, everything is included, all you need to do is show up. (food, candy, games, etc)

Trunk or Treat - people bring cars and decorate trying to win votes. interactive works great, being able to sit on a motorcycle, fish for live fish in the back of a truck. short puppet show.

Food - we bring in Carl's Jr. just so we don't half to deal with it, and it is a name brand we can put on PR that people know

Games - carnival table games
Face Painting
Bounce Houses
Cookie decorating
Tons and Tons of Candy

Biggest parts to include:
1. follow up - get their information, we do this by having everyone vote for their favorite car. on the slip we get their name, phone, address etc. to help get more in we have a raffle (family bowling, toys r us gift card, and grand prize last year was ipod shuffle)

2. security - I don't think we have had a year yet where we have not had to remove someone from campus. Because the food is free we get a good number of homeless people visiting. We love this, however if they have been drinking or are on drugs we ask them to leave and this doesn't always go over well.

3. Welcome Table - we have a long campus and people enter from both ends, so we have two welcome centers where we have extra bags in case kids don't have any, general church info etc.

4. communication before and the night of - on that night your coordinator, security, welcome tables need to be able to communicate, we use two way radios.

Over all we have found this to be one of the best outreach components to the community. to the point that last year we had a new family from the neighborhood come down about half way through the night because no one was coming to their door, they saw a neighbor and asked where everyone was at? and their neighbors response was "everyone is at the church, that is where everyone goes for Halloween"

so Yeah God! it is amazing to see Him work every year from this program alone :) Please feel free to ask any other questions, I would love to help out however I can, I have graphics, voting cards, signs etc, all done and would be more then willing to share.

In Him
Jeremy

We have been doing Trunk or Treat for about 7 years and it is one of our funnest events for kids and volunteers.

We put out flyers with information about the event and include a statement - no violent, scary or evil costumes.

We have guys dressed up as keystone cops to direct and organize our parking lot so that kids can go down one lane and then another and encourage them to come back inside once they are done and we have food , hot chocolate, hot sider, cookies etc inside.

We have a registration table inside and then a table for judging the different age groups for best costumes.

Then they go outside for the trunks. Our first trunk is our Church van and our Senior Pastor and his wife are always there. They pass out gifts that we provide along with information about children's ministry.

Then they move on to the other cars. We have encouraged ministries to set up cars to help promote there ministry and just to have fun. In the past we have had pizza shops and fire trucks.

We ask that each car provide candy enough for 250 kids, and we will take care of the rest. If they cannot we will help them out. We have runners who are bringing out candy all throughout the night.

We have over the last few years had it after halloween and always on a Friday night. This a good night for parents and people who decorate cars and it is great for buying candy, you can get it half price after halloween. I clean walmart out.

We have asked parents to pre sign up and to donate a bag of candy, we get some and it is helpful, but we do not make it mandatory.

In side we do a rally for about 45 min with music, videos and a very short message focusing on Salvation and trusting Jesus. I do not give an invitation but encourage them to talk with myself or other leaders of the church. I find this is a soft outreach in that I do not hardsell the gospel, it is an opportunity to touch families who do not come to church.

We end the night with the prizes for the best costumes in each age group boy and girl and we give prizes for the top three trunks.

I love this event , it is a lot of work but the kids and parents love it and they come away very happy and exctited and hopefully seeing how great God is.

P Dave

What does Carl's Jr provide and what do you do to get them at your event? We do not have that chain here, but we do have some chains that work this way. We usually partner with Outback Steakhouse for our Summer Family event, but I would like to partner with someone else for our Festival.

Carl's Jr is the equivalent of Hardy's? they bring out a full service truck and make burgers, chicken sandwich's, frys and drinks. they also have the kids meal. it is great because all I need to do is provide a water source and pay them. they staff it, prepare and do all the clean up. price range for that is 4.50 - 6.50 a meal (sandwich, drink, frys)

here is a link to what in and out does that is similar to what carls jr does. sorry I can't find the info on carls site, they just went through some restructuring, last time i had to just call the general number and they were able to get me to the right place.

http://www.in-n-out.com/cookout_trailer.asp
http://www.ckr.com/index.html

one thing i will say is that in all of this yes it is easier and at the same time the reason we provide the food, and provide it free is because of our socio economic make up. we have a very large number of people who work multiple jobs, thus making it hard, and some have trouble even having food around. so long term we provide help, but for a night like Halloween where the kids want to have fun, it is a time where families can come, eat, and have fun. On top of that for a church of 450 to run an event for 2500(conservative guess as to number of people, we fed 1200 last year), I'll take all the help i can get

We've done Trunk or Treat in the past in combination w/ Light in the Night.  It's a great way to make a whole family event w/out having to rethink a theme every yr.

What to expect or not expect may be very wide spread as I can tell from just reading the few I have read here.

But I can tell you what I enjoy doing with Trunk or Treat. I enjoy networking with several different strip mall places and hosting trunk or treat everywhere with a ton of different strip malls.

My goal this year is to be at 8 different strip malls with each one competing against the other for bragging rights of having the best and most cars decorated. Then within each one have a contest for the best decorated vehicle. Give nice prizes away for all of these winners.

Just an idea, but this is what i have enjoyed doing. It is off the church property and we tend to draw in a ton more non-church people. I have people from our church at each one and we use it as a time to not only greatly influence the kids (we always bring the best treats for the kids, it is a personal goal of mine to make sure that my church has the best treats) but we can influence the greatest amount of people who do not go to church anywhere. Once we do it on our church property it kills it for us.

Just some thoughts and opinions.

Hi, we are doing a Trunk or Treat this year. I have usually only done Fall festival type events, but the SP wanted to try the Trunk or Treat. We are going for 100 cars, so we can advertise 100 and call it the Trunk or Treat 100, with a NASCAR theme, which goes well in NC. I would like some pictures of the vehicles to give my people some ideas for how to decorate. Does anyone have any that you could send me?
Thanks.

Are most of you in warm states? I wonder about having a trunk or treat in Iowa where it could be snowing and/or very cold. Anybody plan for bad weather? Do you do a rain date? Just wondering.

i have to admit- i've never heard of Trunk or Treat before.. i think i've picked up the idea of it, but can someone just give a simple explanation?  it sounds like a fun event, and i'm very interested.

Trunk or treat is basically trick or treating from car trunks.

My concern in doing it at strip malls is you have no control over who is there giving out candy.  Since we live in the area where the "candy man" was years ago (for those who do not know, he put poisin in pixie sticks) we tend to be very careful.

I can see why classic car owners would not be interested in decorating their trunks. Too much $ spent on the car to mess it up. LOL.

That said - we did a festival last year on Halloween. We wanted to be able to offer more than just candy, so we had all games tied to a Bible story/character. Also did the Pumpkin Patch parable. We had a pumpkin decorating contest where each person or family could bring a pumpkin decorated as a Bible character or story. This is always a highlight for us. Everyone loves it.

The feedback we got was "thank you for doing this on Halloween. Most churches did their stuff last weekend, and we need a place to take our kids tonight." Something to think about.

Most fast food places have catering. Chick fil a, McDonalds, etc.  We just do not have the budget to have them feed a thousand people. We did corn dogs, nachos, and cookies last year and it was well received. We ordered our corn dogs from Angel Food Ministries.

We did trunk or treat for a few years and found it to be successful. Decorating the trunks is fun and people can really get creative. make sure you space out the cars where they are not too close together. IF YOU HAVE A BUS... REALLY DECK IT OUT WITH LIGHTS AND RUN A BIBLE THEME THROUGH IT. HAVE DIFFERENT CHARACTERS SITTING ON THE BUS FROM THE FRONT TO THE BACK AND AS THEY HAND OUT CANDY THEY GIVE THEIR NAME AND WHEN THEY LIVED IN HISTORY. KIDS EXIT DOWN SOME STEPS FROM THE BACK OF THE BUS.

Last year we did Hero's Unmasked and had over 3000 people walk though the grounds! WOW! This year's theme is WILD WEST FEST. Carnival type atmosphere with magic shows, puppet shows, games, food, horse rides and lots of candy.

We usually start doing serious planning in August. Since it is at the beginning of the schoolyear it is hard to get many motivated. We start accepting candy donations usually in the beginning of October. This year we are going to tweak Heroes Unmasked to be used at our event - mainly using their game ideas and trading cards. We will start making the booths within the next week. Our inflatables were reserved a few weeks ago and I started on those early to make sure I get what I want. We do carnival games inside and have the trunk or treat outside. We call our event THE FESTIVAL. We have had military vehicles, emergency vehicles, the kids love the tractors and dump trucks we get too. My dad works at the dairy that bottles the milk for the area and will bring his old fashioned truck out and hand out white and chocolate milk. We have had race cars out too. This year we are making it more of a ministry fair with having the trunks being sponsored by different ministries throughout the church and having information for interested parents.

We have had it very cold one year and we provided free hot chocolate to everyone and only had trunk or treat for one hour instead of the full two hours.

We've found Trunk or Treat to be the best way to provide something safe for the kids and be able to interact at the same time.

We do ours at a school.  The district allows us to send flyers through the school which is a plus.

Decorating the trunks for the kids is the main attraction.  Rain or shine, snow or sunny - it doesn't matter.  They come by the hundreds.

We serve free donuts, coffee and hot chocolate.

We use cars, trucks, vans and motorcycles.  It's all fun.

No strings attatched is our motto.  We're just there to have something safe for our kids.  We hand out a brochure with our church information.

This year we've invited two smaller churches in the area to join us.

Trunk or Treat is a lot less work and more time to visit with the kids and their parents.

Have really good lighting because of the safety issue.  have one or two areas where there is extra candy for replemishing the supplies for the car trunks.  have a route for the kids to go so congestion is to the minimum.  umbrellas available if it is raining.  give specific information to all car owners-where to park, what time to be in place, what time trunk or treat begins and ends.

I've only been at this church for a year, and Trunk or Treat is an established tradition that we were introduced to last October. We also have a pretty big Classic Car pool to draw on, as our church hosts an annual Car Show. So I got pretty excited about your Classic Car / Trunk or Treat Twist. 98 seconds later, the idea was dead here. When I asked the director of the Car Show, she said that this idea had come up in the past and OUR Car Show guys said there was no way they wanted a bunch of "sticky, face-painted, sword-toting, sugared-up kids anywhere near their cars."

If you get it to work, I'd love to hear about your approach!

This is our 2nd annual trunk or treat.  We had a blast and are doing it again with added activites, like inflatables, cotton candy, popcorn, a band, pumpkin smash and car bash.  Some of our  trunk ideas from last year are extreme college football fans, several different fall fun ideas, 50's theme, prize walk (cake walk), Star Wars, boom box (music trunk), Batman's cave, and Queen Esther's tent.  Please share past and present trunk ideas that you have so that we can pass them on to our people.  Let your creative juices flow.

I am in IL and we are doing Trunk or Treat.  We are going to do ours on October 31st night.  When I arrived at this church, they had rain dates for our Easter Egg Hunt.  I was very clear that I thought having a rain date would work against our effort to draw a crowd.  In fact, I believe I was right.  The morning of our EEH it was VERY cold, I think the high was in the 20's-30's but below 32.  Thankfully, last yr we had no snow but just COLLLLD wind.  We had the largest attendance in history for hunt!  Obviously, the Lord went before us but I believe there were several factors of the reason for the larger attendance.  I say all of that to say, I would not set a rain date.  Just my opionion, but it's something you have to think out.  As well, w/ this event you could move it indoors if necessary and just have the people bring their stuff inside to give out...You lose the trunk aspect...

Rain, Cold, oh ya. I am in greater DC area and we get cold, but it just seems to be part of what happens. You can't change and people seem to adapt. I am using a major department store parking lot this year and will just drive off their regular attenders. We have opened the car decorating up to anyone as long as they call and register with us before a certain date.

We will have our moon bounce and other inflattables out there, give away free candy, hotdogs, apple cidar, hot chocolate, and all.

Rain does put a damper on things and we don't have a rain date. it is hard to have a rain date on something like this for us. So please everyone help us all pray for no rain that day.
