Starbucks for Preschoolers
Starbucks"As a children's pastor, I realized that I was becoming insulated from the community," writes Dienna Goscha in this Kidology Zones article.

"All of my work was taking place within the church. How was I to be the salt of the earth and light to the world if I lived in a cocoon built inside the walls of the church? How could I be Jesus to my community in a way that relationships could be built and sustained?"

"The answers to my questions came inside a coffee shop surrounded by preschoolers and their moms."

Code of Ethics
CurriculumOver in the Kidology Forums, member fldstephanie asks:

I'm curious - do any of you, as a leader - have a written code of ethics for your volunteers to follow? If so, are you willing to share it with me?

I'm doing some research right now and am about the start this difficult discussion. I want to go in as prepared as I can be.

Do you have a written Code of Ethics that you use in your ministry?  Have you had conflicts that have required a Code?  Share your knowledge!

Volunteer Standards
Thumbs UpWhat standard of living and behavior should be expected of those who serve in the children's ministry and are put before children as role models?

While none of us are perfect, serving and modeling Christ before children is a high calling indeed. This linked article is from Karl Bastian's Volunteer Manual and is known as the "10 Standards of Excellence" that he expected all of his volunteers to live up to in order to serve in the children ministry.

While he did not ask them to sign anything, he goes over it with every volunteer either in a group orientation or one on one if they miss that, and lets them know that this is the expectation.

Leadership: Self Correcting
Tennis PlayerBarney Kinard explores the idea of adjusting your leadership style through trial and error:

The only way we learn anything is always at someone else's expense. After all, the church pays you for your expertise, but they also pay you to learn from your mistakes! The better you become at handling this adjustment, the better your leadership becomes. So you must make an effort to learn from everything you do as a leader. Learning to evaluate, think, assessing your situation and/or getting feedback on "what works" and "what does not work" is what "self correcting" is all about.
