Kidology Theorem #37 - Break out of the mold!

 

Once as a child, I was so excited about a day I had just experienced. I cried out, “I will never forget today!” A well-meaning but rather insensitive adult said to me, “Sorry kid, but not only will you forget today, you’ll probably forget most of your childhood.” Ironically, I have forgotten the details of that day, but I never forgot the words of that adult. His words haunted me for days – would I really forget most of my childhood? I made a point from that day on to remember my childhood. I started journaling and took mental photographs of special moments. Now as a teacher of children, when I recount endless stories from my childhood during my lessons, people are often amazed at how many memories I have from my childhood. I have to thank that man who gave me that dire warning. I was determined to prove him wrong! I believed my childhood was too wonderful to be forgotten, and the same is true of the children you teach! 

However, not many children will be so determined to chisel their memories into permanent recollections. If you want your students to have long-term memories of your classroom you need to be willing to break out of the normal routines and do the unthinkable!
