For children, the Bible can be a very intimidating book simply due to its size. This unit will erase kids' impressions of the Bible as a giant, overwhelming volume that will take years to wade through. Instead, they will view the Scriptures as a collection of smaller books written personally for them. You will introduce children to exciting tools that will help them delve more deeply into the Bible. Watch their confidence grow as kids gain a broader understanding of how the Bible is organized and how to navigate its pages! Students will be motivated to practice applying biblical principles to their daily lives. The Bible is not just a book to be studied —- but God's Book that can change their world!
Lesson 1: One-of-a-Kind Book
It is even more important today that children discover and come to appreciate the incredible uniqueness and importance of the Word of God. More than just another book, the Bible is a gift from the Creator of the universe given to each and every child as a guide to help them get to know their maker, find salvation, and live the life He intended for them. Too often Bibles lay around ignored while the mystery and fascination for what lies between its covers has been lost. The goal of this lesson is to reignite in children a curiosity and respect for the Bible and the difference it can make in their lives if they learn how to use it.
Lesson 2: Exploring God's Word
This lesson will help children feel comfortable navigating their Bibles. They will gain a basic understanding of how the Bible is organized, how to find verses, and what some of the reference tools are that are found in common Bibles. They will be encouraged to make the Bible a tool that they can use and explore even as a child and that can make a real difference in their life today and in the years ahead if they will start now to master this amazing Book written by God.
Lesson 3: Cool Bible Tools
This lesson will help expand children's understanding of the Bible and ignite their curiosity by introducing them to reference tools, transforming the Bible from a giant book that is confusing and intimidating to one that is loaded with treasure and intrigue, just waiting to be discovered. Once children see that there is help to understanding the things that used to stop them, they will be encouraged to dive in deeper to this book that is studied and talked about so much at church. In addition, through atlases and archeological reference books, children will begin to see just how much the Bible is connected to the outside real world and what they see and hear at school, on television, in museums and in other books. While there is sometimes conflict between the Bible and what the world teaches – seeing the same names, places and topics brings excitement and relevance to a book that otherwise can seem dull and disconnected from daily life.
Lesson 4: My Guide for Life!
After learning why the Bible is special, how it is organized, and how to study it, it is time to circle back and focus on why it is worth studying -– because it has the power to change lives and is the key to a life God blesses. Your students have come to see that their Bible is a gift written for them from God, that it isn't as big and overwhelming as it originally seemed, and that there are a lot of helpful tools to make it easier to understand. But beyond the academic aspects of this incredible book, children need to be inspired to be see their Bible as the key to walk with God and the secret to a life that God blesses.
