Overwhelm with Excellence!
Whenever I get to meet other children’s pastors or Kidmin leaders, I make it a goal to learn something that will make me better at what I do. This month, a dream came true to have Josh Denhart bring his Amazing Chemistry Show to my church as a sneak peek into what our kids have in store in a few weeks when we do his B.A.S.I.C. Elements VBS.
I was blown away by Josh – but not for the reason you may think. The show was incredible (watch our highlight video), which I knew it would be. His VBS has raised the bar for Vacation Bible School materials, but I already knew that, too.
What impressed me the most was his advance pre-show preparation. Regular e-mails came in with tips, advice, encouragement and insights on how to pull off a great event. But even after the show, he wasn’t done! I got an e-mail 30 minutes after the show, thanking me, acknowledging the hard work, and an encouragement to rest – but be ready to follow up! A few days later, another note came reminding me to appreciate those who had helped with the event.
When I asked him about the how and why of his guided support, his answer became the nugget I would take from my encounter of working him this past week: “I believe in overwhelming with excellence,” he said. But this wasn’t just a motto – he had demonstrated it. I couldn’t help but start thinking how I could do the same in my own ministry.
Do we settle for what is enough, or do we seek to overwhelm with excellence? Where can you raise the bar in your ministry?
