Be Different!

I just got back from the 9th annual Yosemite Summit, and yet again it was an incredible week filled with intense time with God, awesome fellowship with other children’s pastors, and insight into life and ministry as we hiked through God’s incredible creation on display in Yosemite National Park.

God spoke to each of us through unique object lessons that He placed before us on the trail. One such illustration that struck me was when in the center of a group of strong, straight trees there was one that stood out. It’s branches stretched out in all directions defying the uniformity around it. It was different, and it made a statement. “There is nothing wrong with the trees around me, but I choose to be different.”

Too often in life and ministry, I believe we spend too much time trying to be like others. Emulating traits in people we admire is not a bad thing, but it should not be at the expense of being who God made us to be. Looking at how other churches do ministry can be helpful – but we still need to be willing to be different and to do what God leads us to do. Learning from others is wise, but copying others too much can rob us of the opportunity to allow God to do something new and unique in our own life and ministry.

Most of the people or ministries we look to for inspiration are admirable precisely because they chose to be different in how they approached a challenge. So now it is your turn… Be Different! And watch what God will do in and through you to build the Kingdom of God!

Discipleship Ideas for Divorced and Single Parents

When discipleship is the strategy, Deuteronomy 6:6-8 can be a reality, even for single and divorced parents. In this zone post, Linda Jacobs from Divorce Care for Kids discusses how the church can help parents live this out.

“When I’m at children’s ministry conferences, I hear many people refer to Deuteronomy 6:6-8. They usually explain the importance of parents being responsible to disciple their children based on this Scripture. I think most of us assume parents have the greatest influence on their children. While I agree with that idea, I wonder if we aren’t assuming all children live in a loving, Christian two-parent home.”
