Share the Spotlight
You're in children’s ministry because you are awesome with kids. You probably started out as a volunteer, and before you knew it, you were in charge of the whole thing! Or, working with kids came so natural to you that you pursued children’s ministry as a career, and now you get to do it every week! The kids and parents love what you do… and there can be a tendency to build the ministry around your talents.
It’s great that you are awesome with kids, but as a leader, your role isn’t just to do fantastic ministry for kids. It is to provide them with the best learning experiences, and that means you don’t go solo! One of the secrets to effective ministry is to share the spotlight. Don’t make the ministry all about you.
In the last year I’ve brought in friends like Josh Denhart, Jeff McCullough, Barney Kinard and Brett Belleque (pictured here) to provide my kids with a wide variety of learning experiences. From hip-hop scripture worship to chemistry explosions to balloons and more – my job isn’t to hog the stage, but to make it a platform for a great variety of learning experiences. My prayer is that the kids I minister to will hear a plurality of voices all telling them the same thing – it strengthens and reinforces the Message I am sharing and builds a foundation that will outlast me.
