Curing Kids of the "Gimmie Gimmie's"

We live in a selfish culture. Kids are especially susceptible to focusing on what THEY want and need while over-looking the needs of others and the many things they have to be thankful for. How do you combat this natural tendency we all have toward self-focus and greed?

That’s why I created Gimmie Gimmie Thanksgiving years ago, based off the popular Parker Brother’s game, Pit. We later added a Christmas version as well. If you’d like to see how I have used this game as part of an over-all lesson, check out what I did last year for my Thanksgiving lesson at my church.

It won’t cure kids of selfishness, but it will help them focus on all they have to be thankful for, and that’s always a good thing!

Be Proactive

Do you ever feel like you're trying to run your ministry as a victim, instead of as a leader? Lance McKinnon brings us an article this week that helps us take a look at how we can gain or regain control of our ministries.

"When I first started in kid’s ministry I saw myself as a victim. I loved the kids, but I felt like my ministry was totally at the mercy of other people. I played the blame game a lot. Things would get better if:

    • parents place a higher value on their children.
    • more people would step up and volunteer.
    • my pastor understood how important kids ministry is.

This type of thinking does not get you anywhere. You do need people to help you minister to the kids, but people will not follow you just because you think they should. A proactive person does not focus on the things he can’t control."

Don't Be a Turkey This Thanksgiving

We live in a "gimmie-gimmie" culture that focuses on how much it can get. God wants us to have an attitude of gratitude for the many blessings we already have.

The purpose of this unit is not only to help kids focus on being thankful, but to challenge them to think of some people that they haven't expressed thanks to, and help them think of some ideas to express their thanks in practical ways.

Theme Verse: 1 Thessalonians 5:18 - "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."

Why I Celebrate Halloween

Do you ever question whether your church should celebrate, or even recognize, Halloween? You are not alone. Many struggle with this spiritual dilemma every year. Pastor Joshua Teis shares with you 5 reasons why he chooses to embrace this holiday and make the most of it.

"We are only days away from the spookiest holiday of the year... and I can’t wait. For some, Halloween is a time of haunted houses, children in costumes, and enough candy to last through Christmas. For others, it is a time of confusing explanations, vague historical references, and self-denial.

For Christians who do not celebrate Halloween, I will not attempt to change your mind. However, I would like to give a few reasons why this pastor and his family choose to participate in this holiday."
