Principles for Powerful Programming

We have so little time each week with the kids God has entrusted to us to make an eternal impact – so we need to make every minute count. It’s not enough to have a good program. You need to create a program that has some pop and power and pulls the kids along. It needs to have clear direction, purpose and it must be intentional. There has to be a clear plan that is executed with precision.

I recently met with my volunteers at my new church and shared with them some Principles for Powerful Programming that can help transform a good program into an experience that makes it a magnet for kids – something kids won’t want to miss and that visitors will beg their parents to bring them back to. Ready? Here they are:

Principles of Powerful Programming (that engage an audience and hold their attention!)

  1. Start like a horse out of the gate instead of a locomotive picking up speed.
  2. Don’t say what you are going to do… Just Do It!
  3. Stop while the kids still like it. (Last emotion is the lasting emotion.)
  4. Every element must flow into the next without pause, delay or hesitation. (Be “on deck”)
  5. Do everything with excellence – practiced and presented with the highest quality possible.
  6. Always use something visual to enhance what is going on. It can be on-screen or in-hand.
  7. Romans 12:11 “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord!”

The Great Adventure Cards

Explore the use of simple trading cards to connect your children to each other, your volunteers, their parents, and most importantly, God’s Word!

The Great Adventure Cards is a set of 80 Bible-based trading cards organized into 12 series' (Noah, Elijah, Moses, Miracles, etc.). Children love collecting and trading cards. Channel this interest toward the great adventures found in God’s Word. These cards are a great supplement to your existing curriculum.

Children will eagerly return to church each week for a new random card to collect and trade with other children and adult volunteers. Watch relationships grow as they trade cards to complete different series' and eventually collect the entire 80-card set! At home, children will look up and read the Bible stories with their parents in order to answer the validation question on the bottom of each card. Children who collect all the cards in a series can be rewarded with a fun prize — an easy and effective tool for partnering with parents!

The Beauty of Approachability

If you're only focused on ministry and not people, then you're missing one of your greatest callings, according to Jonathan Cliff  from jonathancliff.com:

"When I was 16 years old I got my first job bussing tables at a Goldie’s Restaurant in my hometown. This job involved removing half- eaten food from tables, waiters that wouldn’t share their tips, cleaning the bathrooms, and just about every other conceivable disgusting thing in the restaurant business. But I’ve always remembered one thing from my 4 nights of employment. (Are you surprised? Of course I quit after 4 days!)

I guess I wasn’t exactly hiding my dissatisfaction with my chores, and my boss pulled me into his office to tell me to smile more. I laughed at his request and then he got in my face and told me that to work for his restaurant I had to look approachable, and if I was walking around looking upset; that nobody would ever ask for my help ... and then there was the potential that an unhappy customer might leave the restaurant. That right there is some truth!"

Kidology Coaching is a Very Unique Experience

There are many training opportunities today that are offered that use the term "coaching" that would be better described as "training."

  • Watching online training videos about various skills and aspects of children's ministry can be very helpful - but it is not coaching.
  • Joining into a group call to hear from an expert in children's ministry can also be a great learning experience - but it also is not coaching.
  • Having a kit that gives you some area of leadership to focus on each week can be a useful resource - but it also is not coaching.
  • Even talking with an expert regularly for advice is not necessarily coaching if they have not been trained in how to coach.

If they are just telling you what they think you should do, they are consulting or advising, not coaching. All of these things, and other helpful tools, can be a helpful supplement to your leadership development, but they should not be confused with genuine coaching.
