Is Your Ministry in Survival Mode or Creative Mode?

In the popular Lego-like game of Minecraft, kids choose between Survival and Creative Mode. In one they have to find and build everything from scratch, while in the latter, they have access to everything and can build amazing things.

Children’s Ministry is a lot like playing a game of Minecraft… we often start out in Survival Mode – we need to find volunteers, leaders, resources and supplies. We need to create spaces where ministry can take place… but as we build, better options become available. We build upon past successes, learn from mistakes, all while watching out for Creepers and Zombies! (They are the creatures that are constantly blowing things up and attacking!)

The danger is that we can get so busy building, fixing and dealing with the interruptions that we never make it into Creative Mode. In Minecraft, switching to Creative Mode requires an intentional command… but everything changes. The Creepers no longer explode, the Zombies ignore you, and you can build whatever you want with unlimited access to resources. It’s time to get amazing!

What’s the secret to getting into Creative Mode in Kidmin? Keep reading on Karl’s blog….

What Type of Kids Pastor Are You?

Do you know your strengths and weaknesses in ministry? Are you surrounded by people who can fill in where you lack? Mark Harper helps explain how you can build a strong kids ministry.

"There are different types of kids pastor. This is why it can be dangerous to go look at someone else’s program and copy it. If a church has a successful program then they built their program around the strengths of the leader and you may or may not have those same strengths.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t learn from others. Everyone needs a mentor or two, but to totally copy someone else’s ministry is a mistake.

You need to build your Kid’s Ministry around your strengths."

It's Fall Checklist Time

In the classic Children’s Ministry Handbook, The Art of War, Kidmin Guru Sun Tzu writes, “Every battle is won before it’s ever fought.” Which simply means, preparation is everything.

He also writes, “The children’s pastor who wins makes many calculations in his office before the battle is fought. The children’s pastor who loses makes but few calculations beforehand.” (OK, I changed ‘general’ to ‘children’s pastor’ and ‘temple’ to ‘office’ – but you see my point!)

Yes, Sundays can be a battle to get through – but the prepared leader sees victory! For some help on being prepared, visit my blog and join me as we work on developing a Fall Checklist to get ready for a great new year of ministry!
