Now that I've returned from Yosemite Summit, our yearly retreat for male children's pastors, wanted to mention an insight that was shared by one of the guys on our trip.

Yosemite Summit 2011Doug noted that in the path of our life there are a lot of obstacles and problems that get in our way, much like the cliffs, boulders, and trees we encountered in Yosemite National Park. These irritate us and often prompt us to reroute our plans.

However, as we all spent time watching majestic waterfalls pouring over these cliffs, routing down the mountainside around rocks and trees, we realized these obstacles made the water so majestic to watch. They gave the falls their character.

The same is true with us. Our character is developed through the obstacles in our lives. If God were to give us a smooth life, without problems, bumps and obstacles, what would grow our character?

So the next time you see a big boulder up ahead - instead of being frustrated or complaining - realize God is just forming you into a majestic testimony of his power and grace!

Unbridled 2011 was a success!
Unbridled

Pastor Kim Bobb, the host of Unbridled, our women's retreat, shares a quick recap of the event which took place a few weeks ago:

Unbridled 2011 was the best yet! The friendships we made, experiences we shared and fun had will be with me for a lifetime. I spent 3 days with Children's Pastors from all over the country who shared my passions, my frustrations, and my need for a "getaway."

This year we were blessed to have women from Texas, Tennessee, West Virginia & Ohio. We learned about horses, roped and rode together, we laughed, relaxed, poured our hearts out, cried and shared.

Summer Ministry Plans
Summer Ministry PlansFrom the Kidology Forums, member KJ Aull shares the following:

Our Wednesday nights end soon. I am considering options for the summer. We run one week of VBS early. I have several options I'm considering:

  1. Adding another week of camp later in the summer
  2. Running an evening once a week for 5 weeks mid-summer
  3. Special events at random

Last summer was my first in children's ministries, so this summer I'm ready to be more thoughtful.

Touring One Way Street
Touring One Way Street

Here's an update from Kidology To Go:

We stopped by One Way Street, which has been a supporter of Kidology To Go.  This was a unique stop for us because it is the "birthplace" of Kevin Shutterbug, the puppet host of our video updates. They are primarily a puppet making company, but they also have skits, books, DVDs, illusions, props, and other kids' ministry aids.

We enjoyed taking a look at their warehouse, featuring boxes and boxes of different puppets. I spotted several puppets we have used through the years, including a heart puppet and a Bible puppet...

7 Basic Safety Precautions for Every Children's Ministry
7 Basic Safety Precautions for Every Children's Ministry

Safety is non-negotiable in children's ministry. You can have the very best curriculum, most creative activities, and dynamic decor, but if you have not made safety a priority, you could be headed for potential disaster. We can never fully protect our ministries or our kids from all impending harm, but it is our responsibility to be proactive when it comes to safety. The following list is a good place to start.

Point System Software
Point System Software<"We have a great check-in system, however, it does not allow us to keep track of the kids' points," notes Kidology Forums member Kleinhouse.

"Is there anything out there that would keep track of different fields - and add them up - so that we may run reports on a monthly basis?"
