Being Strategic About Meeting Special Needs

Did you know that one in five U.S. households have at least one member with special needs? Or that approximately 90% of special needs families don’t attend church? How can this be when the Bible instructs us, “But when you give a banquet invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous” (Luke 14:13-14).

Ministry to families with special needs can be challenging. The range of special needs can be intimidating, recruiting volunteers to help is difficult, and developing a strategy to provide a welcoming, safe, fun and encouraging environment takes hard work. I know this, because we are working to improve our own ministry to families with special needs at my church. One of the resources that has been a timely help for us was written by one of our Kidology Coaching graduates who has extensive experience in this area. Many of the resources today focus on schools and public programs. However, Invite Them In by Doug Olson, is the CHURCH GUIDE to welcoming children with special needs into your church. It has proven to be an invaluable resource for us – short, instructive, and practical, it is THE book every children’s ministry leadership team should read and distribute to their volunteers.
