Making the Invisible Visible for Kids!

Monday night I did a Family Fun Night Show at my new church. It was an evening of Gospel illusions, puppetry, and illustrating for parents why we do kids ministry the way we do. At one point I explained that I would be levitating a beach ball!

But not before quoting John 3:8, where Jesus says, “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

Then, I pulled out a leaf blower and demonstrated “levitating a beach ball!” I did several sizes and encouraged dads to try it at home! (We gave out little beach balls to the kids at the end.) But what was the point?

The things of God are often invisible, abstract and difficult to understand. Our job in children’s ministry is to make the invisible visible through creative ministry. The audience couldn’t see the wind, but they could hear it and see what it was doing.

In the same way, kids can’t see God, but they can hear about Him from us and see the things God is doing! It was a fun illustration of the challenge before us who teach kids.

Because Jesus Loves Children,

Pastor Karl Bastian

PS: Yes! You may use this illustration in your own ministry!

Helping Kids to Honor Their Dads

"It's sometimes awkward to help your own children to honor you, as the dad," notes Kidology Coach, Barney Kinard.

"It is my opinion that "honoring dad" lessons are best taught by their mother and grandparents. However, if we are as committed to partnering with parents as we allege to be, then we must step up and enter into this intergenerational dialogue."

"As Children's Ministers, we must help kids to honor their fathers (and mothers). Here are some elements that you might selectively address over the extended time of your influence:

  • To honor dads, there must be some teaching about what honor means - to revere, respect, or fear. Multiple behaviors must involve things like: esteem, concern, respect, love, thankfulness, obedience, appreciation, affirmation, applause, recognition, language of honor, and caring for them.
