I just wanted to thank you. I was totally freaked out about Sunday, as in Tomorrow, because we've been so busy at church I got behind and had absolutely NOTHING planned for tomorrow. Two ToyBox Tales and a trip over to Kidology and I'm good to go! I have MORE than I need now. Thanks again!

I've had a heart for missons since I was a young boy and my mom told our children's church the story of Amy Carmichael. Since then I've been to Honduras, Mexico, the Philippians, Hungry, Austria, Germany, France, England, Whales, Spain, and elsewhere doing some kind of mission work, usually children's ministry related, and I am the son of a former Missions Pastor at Moody Church who is now a director of something or other (I can't keep track of his titles) at OCI in Colorado Springs... BUT even with all these rubs with missionary work, I have to admit my ignorance that there has been a Children's Missions Movement steadily advancing the cause of encouraging and supporting the effort to introduce children to missions and help churches with missions education for the past twenty years. This losely structured group of missions minded people have met periodically over the years with a fluid collection of individuals coming together to evaluate where we are in introducing missions to kids and educating churches in how to promote world missions within the local church, as well as to evaluate what resources are available, and what is still needed. I will be writing a Kidology Report in time about all that I have learned that has taken place from new resources and conferece events that have taken place.

I was honored to be invited to this latest gathering to take a look at where we are at in this Great Commission effort to equip children to impact their world for Christ. And I have a bunch of new friends who are passionate about kids and about missions. I learned that the Children's Missions Movement has a unique two-sided challege. One on side we deal with those who are passionate about kids, but are missing the need to reach the worlds kids, and that our children can (and should!) be a part of that effort. On the other side, there are those who are passionate about missions, but overlook the need and effectiveness of including children in that effort despite the fact that the vast majority of missionaries received their call to world missions AS A CHILD, before they had the attachments of adults that make a missionary life-style so hard to embrace.

We broke into small groups to look at the different aspect of children's missions, and evaluated and did some God empowered praying and planning for what God might be doing next, and I must hint now that some pretty incredible plans were birthed at this gathering, that if truly of God, and not just our collective creativity, will rock the Kingdom for kids and missions!

God is doing amazing things around the world in the area of kids and missions and it was so encouraging to discover all the resources that are available. We will be working hard to compile lists of these resources to make available and to network those who are passionately engaged in this effort. If you are passionate about kids or missions (or better yet, BOTH!) keep your eye on the horizon for some great things as we seek to better coordinate all that we are doing, with God's help, and to launch in time an awareness and action campaign to champion the cause of helping kids to impact the globe through missions!

If you would like to be a part of this effort, reply to this post and share what you or your ministry or church is doing with kids and missions, or any resources you have available. Help us gather information on what God is already doing in this all important effort!

Thanks so very much for this report - and so quickly done!  I feel that our meeting was historic and only God knows what He will do with the energy and giftedness we put together.  You were a great part of this, Karl, and it's fun to read an evaluation by a "new comer."  Welcome!  Enjoy CPC.Tongue Nancy

We are planning on taking a group of families to a children’s home in Mexico for the third straight year this Fall.  Our group is just for families, so it is a little different than others.

We love taking the whole family along as we want the whole family to share in the experience.  We took 5 families with a total of 24 people.  They all get to see and experience new things and we believe the impact will be longer as the families can “relive” and remember their time over the years.  It impacts the whole family – as families experience this together.  It also makes going thru airports and any sightseeing trips a breeze as the parents are responsible for their own kids.

The Children’s home we go to (www.josiahandbethany.org) is right across the Texas border and is great to work with.  They make things so easy.  We arrive in Texas and they will even come across the border and pick us up, which means we don’t have to drive in Mexico.  We serve the kids and adults at the children’s home and also have worked with some churches and ministered to those living in the city dumps.

Another factor for this trip was the cost.  Our trip was from Tuesday-Monday and our total cost for the trip was around $550 per person.  This included everything (flight, travel, hotel, food) except souvenirs.  It was a good length of stay and it was far enough, without being too far, for families not to be too worried or concerned about safety.

This is a trip I hope to continue to make yearly for many years to come.

Hi, Family Missions Trippers,

I think this is a really great way to do mission!  Bravo!

I am collecting materials for working with kids that are either in Spanish, or are bilingual.  Let me know if you'd like a bibliiography.

Also, I'd love to share your story with others when I do workshops at missions and Christian Ed conferences.  May I do so?

Do you know about God's Kids?  A great website to check out: www.GodsKids.org.  Thanks. Nancy Tichy

We started a new group last year for our 4th & 5th graders called "Go M.A.D."(Make a Difference).  Our goal is to expose kids to all different kids of people so that they will begin to see all people as Gods people.  We have four events each year (Serving at the Ronald McDonald House (sick kids & families), working a booth at the special olympics (kids who are different then them), making valentines for people in resthomes (serving the elderly) and ending it this  year with an overnight parent/child stay at our local rescue mission. We will start by bringing our stuff to the mission, setting up our camp (outside but protected) and then proceeding to put on a church service, making the meal, cleaning up and then hearing from the chaplain and some of the guys there what it's like to be homeless.  Last years kids were quick to sign up for these events and some of our familes that participated last year have signed up to go on longer family short term missions projects to Mexico, New Orleans, or Nicaragua.  We are super excited to see what you all came up with!

I love the connection of kids with missions and allowing them the opportunity to see the whole process - we're doing our first family missions trip this summer (couples and singles included) to a camp for inner city kids - we're going for 3 days - we're early in the planning stage - the families are excited to be working TOGETHER side by side w/their kids - we don't have an age limit, so young kids are coming as well as the older ones.  If anyone has done anything like this before and has any helpful suggestions, they'd be welcome!  This is new territory for us! Thanks!

Hello,

Is there some way we could form a little "sub working group" on families doing mission together.  It's something I've been interested in and talking about for a few years, now.  Looks to me like there's more going on than we knew.  Definitely, there is more interest than we ever dreamed of.

I think it will take a few "practionerrs" willing to spend time sharing insights and getting this all together in one place that can be easily accessed.

Let me know what you think.  Thanks.  Nancy

I think its a great idea! I would also love to hear what missions groups or missionaries are doing to effectively reach children in the field. Our Awana group is supporting a Compassion International child but I would also love to find a good solid missionary whose major thrust is reachign children that we could give a small support too.

I am all about the family missions trips as well. This really gets my blood flowing whne i think about it.

Nancy, I would be interested in meeting with you so we can discuss this and other items on children in missions. Your idea of lunch might work for me. What would work for you? Barney

Don't worry, that's why Kidology is here - it makes it possible for conversation and interaction that otherwise distance might have made impossible. Those who can get together, great! But let's keep sharing ideas and resources here and we can all benefit from each others ideas and resources!

Any else on the east coast for Jenn?

Hi everyone,

I am a children's pastor from Long Island, New York and I have developed a curriculum called Kids in Missions where we train 5th - 7th graders in the area of missions. I take kids with me on outreaches where we do Kids krusades. They do the drama & puppets and I am more of an MC. I am also a ventriloquist. Check out my website www.kidsinmissions.org

Thanks! Dave Harff-Children's Pastor-Smithtown Gospel Tabernacle

Hi, Dave,

I would so love to sit down with you and share info and encouragement.  What you've been doing sounds so much like Pete Hohmann's "Bridgebuilders."  And, a gal out here on the West Coast does a summer program that has many of the components and results of yours. Another church I'm connected to does a year of discipleship training with 6th graders that ends in a missions trip.   Probably, there are others I don't know about.

Anyway, I think it points out the need for some kind of directory where people can find each other.  Training kids well for short term mission experiences/discipleship training for tweens is only one of a number of areas where people are doing great things and need to be discovered.

I'm asking the Lord to give us the man and woman power out here in So. California/Western AZ to develop something where we can meet and encourage one another.  I once tried launching something I called MERT - Mission Educators' Round Table, but life got in the way and I dropped it.  At least for the time being.  Who knows what God has for us in the future.

Great that you are sharing your training materials.  Pete Hohmann does, too.

Hope we can keep in touch.

  Nancy Tichy - Riverside, CA

Also, I'd love to know what youur definition of a "missionary" is.  Love the fact that you bring in servanthood in your curriculum.Cool

Hi Nancy,

Please email me at kidsinmissions@yahoo.com

Maybe we can set up a phone appointment. I would love to hear your ideas. Sometimes here on the east coast there are not very many children's pastors.

FamilyFEST is one opportunity for kids and their parents to go on a mission trip together. This summer, they have trips planned to El Paso and Jacksonville. It's for kids in first grade and above, with their parents.

We're back from our Family Missions trip - what a great experience for everyone on the team!  We had about 10 families coming - 29 people in all - families, singles, teens, elementary age kids.  We went to work for 3 days at a camp for kids from the inner city - the whole ministry works with prisons, rescue mission, the camp for kids, training/encouragement for law enforcement, etc.  If you'd like any info on the ministry and how to partner with them, simply e-mail me - they're located in PA about 1/2 an hour from Lancaster.  Beautiful camp - on the Brandywine River - canoeing, water slide, rope swing over the river, swimming, all kinds of sports, covered pavillion, boy/girl dorms, chapel, commercial kitchen, etc.  Beautiful location, great ministry opportunity!!  We worked with 6-9 yr old kids in day camp for the 3 days - it was a wonderful time for our team and for the camp kids - we're already signed up to go back next year!!  The ministry is called County Corrections Gospel Missions and the camp is called The Camp at Old Mill - they don't have e-mail or a website (yet), but if you'd like info on the camp/ministry, I can give it to you if you e-mail me!  It was a great time of working together, parents with kids (parents commenting that they were watching their kids SHINE in ministry), kids learning what it means to serve others - they worked HARD, from the 4 yr old to the 18 yr old to the 40+ yr old, our church family growing closer together, all of us watching God answer prayers, learning a lot in terms of working with the kids, trusting God to provide, the importance of sharing Jesus with the kids (they come from some very hard situations - majority have family member who is incarerated, gangs, violence, drugs, etc.)  Our first Family Missions trip was more than I could have imagined and amazing!!
