One of the best characteristics of childhood that makes kids so fantastic is their constant appetite for ADVENTURE! I'm looking forward to my own adventure as next week I join 7 men for Yosemite Summit in California. Being unplugged from phones, e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, work, and other distractions will allow for adventure while helping us focus on our relationship with God.Adventure!

Unlike adults who have to consciously make plans like this, kids don't wake up in the morning wondering what work they will get done today... rather they anticipate the adventure that awaits! If adults don't help create constructive adventure for them, they will create their own! Why do you think kids make tents out of blankets or forts out of empty boxes? Why do boys turn sticks into swords and girls turn dolls into princes destined to come and rescue them?

Why do kids always ask...

  • "Where are we going?"

  • "When is our next trip?"

  • "What are we doing today?"

Kids want adventure! If you CREATE a SENSE of ADVENTURE for kids, you make every day count - and the best news is that you don't have to go camping, to a baseball game, or spend time at an amusement park to go on an adventure with kids! While these "big adventures" may end up being the highlight of the year, it is the "little adventures" that will set you apart and become the highlight of your relationship with kids.

Splinter Child: A Moment With Noah
Splinter Child

"Noah entered the children's room at church with eyes wide open, full of five year-old exuberance and wonder.

He smiled. I smiled too as I leaned over and gathered him into my arms to hug him. Then I encouraged him to join the other children in a time of play with bouncy balls before Kids Club began. And I remembered. I remembered when I first met him...

Kidmin and Phineas & Ferb
Phineas & Ferb

Marty Martin, Kidology To Go Coordinator, is traveling across the country in his RV providing mobile children's ministry training.  While traveling, he put some thoughts together about Phineas & Ferb, a popular Disney Channel show, and how it relates to kidmin:

Being both a dad and active observer/participant in kid's culture, I have watched Phineas & Ferb with my kids dozens of times.   So I got to thinking, what can we as kidmins learn from this show?

Here are some of my observations:

1. "Random humor" is the humor of choice...
